North-Eastern barber, Tom Baxter, has pledged to cut hair free-of-charge for 24 hours next month in a bid to raise vital cash for sick and premature babies through the Tiny Lives Trust.
Multi-award winning Tom was inspired to hold the ‘Baxter Barberthon’ at his Newcastle Coast Road shop after his godson, Jacob Elliott, now aged 2, suffered a rare heart defect in utero and spent time on the special care baby unit at Newcastle's RVI. Tom is keeping his chair open constantly between 8am on Sunday, April 29 and 8am on Monday, April 30 2018 for people to secure sought-after appointments. Partnering the event will be leading professional haircare range, OSMO, which will be providing attendees with their hero products, while supporting the event globally through social media.
Anyone can book a slot in the charity chair but Tom is also hoping his 32,400 Instagram followers will also help bolster bookings and keep him busy throughout the night: “I won't be charging anything so technically yes, this is a free hair cut,” explains Tom. “But it goes without saying that we will be twisting people's arms to part with some cash, with every penny raised going to the Tiny Lives Trust. This wonderful organisation helps to fund a raft of additional things on the unit, over and above what the NHS provides. We are all so grateful for the start Jacob was given and I wanted to do my bit to give something back now he is a fit and healthy two-year-old.”
